Question by Shredmaster: How do I fix a memory dump?
I just built a new gaming pc, and every now and then it crashes and restarts. When this happens, I get a blue screen with a bunch of stuff on it, but at the bottom it says something like “dumping physical memory.” This mainly happens when I play high-end games like Crysis or Aion, and especially when i have antialiasing turned on, but it occasionally happens at random times when I’m not doing anything incredibly taxing on memory (it never really happens when I play older games like WoW). How do I fix this? My specs are as follows:
AMD phenom 2 x4 955
msi 790fx-gd70 motherboard
6gb ocz gold 1600 memory
xfx radeon 4890
vista home basic 32

1. Answer to your question from the subject: You should fix the memory dump as it was a standard file. This is probably not the answer you wanted but the answer for which you have asked.
2. Go to control panel / administrative tools and search for event logs item. Then verify what events have been logged. Items should point which item failed and caused the problem. Those items should be marked with red icon. There are several groups of logs – ignore “audit” items.
Memory dump is not a problem – it is something that aims to help you after some significant failure happened.
If you cannot locate such log items in the event logs then it is quite possible that the system failed before it was able to log the thing. In such case you should:
- update your drivers to latest versions
- update your games to latest versions
- check if any of the hardware components if overheating (that is very probable cause of the problem)
And if this does not help then you should probably contact with some professional service providing the memory dump.
Note that the cause might be some extra driver (ex. codec for movies or some device driver). In such case you should uninstall the driver and/or disconnect any unneeded devices – it could help.
